How Advancements in AI Technology Can Impact College Students

AI technology is already a big part of everyday life.  In some cases, devices know more about people than those closest to them.

According to Brian Uzzi, a globally recognized scientist, 2019 will be a year of even more advancements in AI technology.

From applications focused on Health, finances, and shopping (just to name a few) Brian Uzzi predicts that 2019 will bring what can be considered a period of “hyper-personalization” to consumers.

With AI-driven personalization already being a part of everything from movie recommendations on Amazon and Netflix to music playlist on Spotify and Google play, you might be wondering how much more advanced AI technology can possibly get.

Physical Fitness

Fitness apps and wearables like Fitbit or apple watch are already popularized.

They can log your unique fitness data from how many steps you take that day to how many calories you consumed.  It can even use that data to personalize a diet experience for you or a workout routine.

The problem with that technology though is that most users of these apps get tired of entering the food they have eaten, or “cheat” and not enter the data. Yeah that’s right, you’re busted!

In 2019, advancements in AI technology will make it possible to take a picture of what you eat, or the app can monitor your food intake automatically through smart glasses, which should cut out the extra time spent manually typing data in the apps.

Shopping

Retail focused AI applications can determine your shopping preferences by looking at your past purchase behaviors as well as behaviors of others like you.

Some of this is already happening today.  For example, Amazon’s ability to recommend products to you simply based of your past product views and purchases.

But 2019 is likely to see this spread across multiple industries and types of products.

Mental Health

Mental Health is another area AI tech is making its way into.

When a person speaks to a therapist, there can be times they won’t want to share their feelings.

AI will take this pressure off by doing the sensing of their own for you.

It will do this by using biosensors to monitor heart rate, galvanic skin response, and other indicators to be able to tell how we feel at any point during the day.

Using this you can understand what times in the day you feel the happiest, or what people increase your energy levels (or decrease them).

Personal Finances

Are you good with money? Do you know your risk appetites? Do you control when you spend and when to save? Or is it an impulse thing?

AI might be able to help with that in 2019.

There is already technology that exists called a “deep-learning algorithm” at the Northwestern Institute on Complex Systems.

This technology can analyze what you say, type, or write and use that to determine your level of confidence.

A finance app incorporating this type of technology can possibly ask you to respond to different risk-tolerance scenarios and assess how confident you really are about each and use that data to make a personalized financial plan for you.
